SPEAKER:

Sandra Astolfo is a Partner at WeirFoulds with a practice devoted to infrastructure and construction law. She has worked with her clients for over 25 years and is a frequent speaker at continuing legal education programs and industry conferences. From negotiating construction agreements, to providing contract administration advice, to litigating, mediating and arbitrating disputes, Sandra advocates on behalf of all project participants. She also assists her clients with protecting their interests in the event of a project participant’s insolvency. Sandra is a Fellow of both the Canadian College of Construction Lawyers and the Construction Lawyers Society of America. She is certified by The Law Society of Ontario as a Specialist in Construction Law and has authored numerous articles on various construction law topics. Sandra is the recipient of the Ontario Bar Association’s 2019 Construction and Infrastructure Law Award of Excellence and is the first female recipient of the reward. She is also repeatedly recognized by Best Lawyers In Canada and the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory as a leading lawyer in Construction Law.

SPEAKER:

GLENN W. ACKERLEY is a partner with the law firm of WeirFoulds LLP in Toronto and is chair of the construction law practice group. Glenn fills the role of a “project lawyer”, providing ongoing advice from the start through to completion of a construction project for public and private owners, developers, contractors, subtrades, suppliers, and design consultants. He regularly advises on project structures, construction and consultant contracts, procurement issues, and risk-avoidance strategies. When disputes arise, Glenn acts for clients in construction lien and trust claims, bond claims, and construction deficiency and delay claims.

Glenn is a Fellow and currently the Treasurer of the Canadian College of Construction Lawyers. He has been recognized as a leading construction law practitioner in the Canadian Legal LEXPERT, Best Lawyers in Canada, and Chambers Canada directories. He is very active in the industry, participating on committees and in working groups, including as a member of the Expert Panel’s Advisory Group on changes to Ontario’s Construction Act. Glenn sits on one of the National Advisory Councils of the Canadian Construction Association and is a Past Chair of the Board of the Toronto Construction Association. He has been awarded the Donald P. Giffin, Sr. Construction Industry Achievement Award (TCA), the Jock Tindale Memorial Award for Integrity in the Construction Industry (OGCA), the Manufacturers, Suppliers and Services Award of Recognition (CCA) and the Chair’s Award (COCA) for his contributions.

He sat on the Executive of the Construction and Infrastructure Law Section of the Ontario Bar Association and taught construction law at Ryerson University’s Department of Architectural Science for many years. He has written several published articles and given presentations on legal topics to both industry and legal groups, including seminars at the Ontario General Contractors Association’s Symposiums and the Admission Course of the Ontario Association of Architects. Appreciating the important role played by alternative dispute resolution, Glenn also regularly acts as mediator, arbitrator, and referee.

SPEAKER:

Howard leads the firm’s Canadian Construction Practice. Howard focuses on all aspects of construction and infrastructure law and his practice encompasses all sectors of that industry. Howard has extensive experience as lead counsel on complex construction disputes involving both major infrastructure projects and private sector projects. He also routinely provides strategic project and contract administration advice with the objective of achieving the early resolution of disputes and regularly advises clients on the preparation and structuring of construction and project agreements.

Howard represents a broad range of clients including public and private owners, general contractors, design-build consortia, lenders, subcontractors, suppliers and design professionals. Howard’s dispute resolution practice entails the negotiation, mediation, arbitration and litigation of claims relating to all facets of construction law including contract disputes, tendering, delay, professional negligence, surety bonds and construction liens and trusts. Howard’s experience spans a wide range of projects, including transit, energy, infrastructure, commercial, condominium developments and manufacturing.

Howard is recognized by his peers as a leading construction lawyer in a wide variety of publications including Canadian Legal Lexpert® Directory, Lexpert® ALM 500 Directory, Chambers Canada, Who’s Who Legal, Best Lawyers in Canada, The Legal 500, Martindale-Hubbell and Lexpert Special Edition: Canada’s Leading Infrastructure Lawyers. Howard is a Fellow of the Canadian College of Construction Lawyers and the former Chair of the Ontario Bar Association’s Construction and Infrastructure Section Executive, on which he served for many years. Howard served as an appointed member of the Advisory Panel for the Province of Ontario’s Construction Lien Act Review, is a member of the Allied Professions Committee of the Toronto Construction Association and regularly speaks at industry and client seminars on a variety of construction law issues. Howard has also published many articles in the area. He is the Contributing Editor of the Construction Law Letter, a bi-monthly national publication of LexisNexis.
